A Night of Inspiration at the International Latino Book Awards

A Night of Inspiration at the International Latino Book Awards

Receiving recognition at the International Latino Book Awards was a deeply meaningful experience. Beyond the personal honor, it was an inspiring encounter with authors from many countries, all united by a shared passion for writing, for ideas, and for keeping the richness of our cultures alive through words.

The ceremony was a true celebration of Latino talent — of diverse voices that are transforming the literary landscape in both Spanish and English. Listening to the stories behind each book, the dreams and challenges of so many creators, was a powerful reminder that literature continues to be a bridge that connects communities.

What’s most encouraging is seeing how the number of Spanish-language readers keeps growing. More and more people are discovering our stories, our traditions, and our unique ways of seeing the world. That is the greatest motivation to keep writing — knowing that there are hearts eager to read, feel, and reflect with us.

My book Calaveras Literarias is an example of how a Mexican tradition can be understood and celebrated by different communities. These poetic compositions — the calaveras— reflect the wit, humor, and depth with which we Mexicans celebrate life and honor those who have passed. Seeing this tradition awaken interest and appreciation beyond our borders has been deeply rewarding.

This recognition reaffirms my commitment to writing and to sharing our cultural heritage. As long as there are readers who seek emotion, beauty, and meaning in words, we will continue to write and to share stories that bring us together.

Carlota Roa is a writer, educator, and cultural promoter. Born in Mexico and based in California, she has dedicated much of her life to preserving and sharing Hispanic heritage through literature and education.

Her book Calaveras Literarias pays tribute to one of Mexico’s most beloved traditions, blending art, humor, and remembrance in a work that celebrates both life and Latin culture.
